Hourglass

The bats that appear on line 379 suggest a vision to the setting of the next stanza. The setting isn’t exactly the same, but the atmosphere that they both convey is very similar. The bats might represent the leaders of the war. They’re getting themselves deeper and deeper into destruction, but they’ve put on a deceptive mask of innocence described as “baby faces”, in place for the real malicious faces of bats. The towers are turned upside down like hourglasses. Their tolling bells are the sand on the race against time. Water is no longer available to nourish the voices of the remaining lives living in the dry barren Europe.
