The battle of Mylae was fought during the First Punic War between ancient Carthage and the Ancient Roman.

Republic. It was the first real naval battle between the two states. The Romans won and conquered Carthage.

Connection to The Waste LandEdit

Eliot chose the First Punic War instead of WWI to stress the fact that warfare is insatiable that it is a never ending cycle throughout the history of mankind. Any way is as grave as the other. War is war, in the end what remain is death and another temptation to wage war.
